The Fruit Belt is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Buffalo. The neighborhood which is located in the southeast area of the city, acquired its name from the early nineteenth century Germans that planted fruit orchards and gardens in the community. During the 1950's, urban renewal set in motion the socioeconomic transformation of the neighborhood.
The University at Buffalo East Side Neighborhood Transformation Project [UB-ESNTP], a program of the Center for Urban Studies within the UB School of Architecture and Planning, announces the launch of its e-newsletter, ADVANCE. Inspiration for this newsletter and for its title comes from a long history of African-American and other people of color speaking truth to power through the printed word.
